BACOLOD City – Raise the minimum salary and end contractualization.
Several labor groups demanded for these from the government during a rally at the public plaza on Monday in observation of the Labor Day.
Specifically, the groups asked President Rodrigo Duterte to set a P500 to P600 national minimum daily wage.
This will enable laborers to cope with the continuously increasing prices of the basic commodities and services, said Wennie Sancho, secretary-general of the General Alliance of Workers Association.
The present P323 minimum daily wage is not enough for the workers’ daily expenses, stressed Sancho, also a labor representative in the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board in Western Visayas.
The P25 increase in the minimum daily wage in Region 6 this year cannot be credited to the Duterte administration, Sancho said.
It was a result of the efforts of labor groups and laborers themselves, he pointed out.
The workers’ purchasing power continues to deteriorate as the prices of basic goods and services keep rising, said Sancho.
Most employees today suffer from the same dire condition and low wages that bugged them years ago, he stressed.
While President Duterte promised change, the change the laborers want is the end of contractualization, Sancho said.
But the Department of Labor and Employment’s Department Order No. 174 does not terminate contractualization but legitimizes it, he claimed.
An executive order ending contractualization would be more appropriate, Sancho said./PN
