ILOILO City — A 16-year-old robbery suspect landed in the hospital after a security guard shot him yesterday at the Barotac Nuevo public market.

Sustaining a gunshot wound in the abdomen, Nony (not his real name) of Barangay Nanga, Pototan was confined at the Western Visayas Medical Center.

Public market security guard Armin Aranga of Barangay Acuit, Barotac Nuevo caught Nony and his companion stealing grocery items at about 12:30 a.m., said Inspector Sullen Domingo, Barotac Nuevo police chief.

It turned out that the suspects were armed. “When (Aranga) tried to arrest them, the robbers shot him,” Domingo said.

Aranga fired back, hitting Nony. The other suspect escaped with their loot.

The security guard surrendered to the police after the incident.

Domingo said the same grocery store had been ransacked a month ago.

“I believe Nony and his companion were also the ones who did it,” he said./PN
