
GUIMARAS – After the pandemic, registered deaths in Guimaras dropped by -24.09 percent, from 1,577 in 2021 to 1,197 in 2022, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
Acute cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death that claimed 129 lives, mostly male, it added.
Other leading causes of death were community-acquired pneumonia, cerebrovascular disease, acute myocardial infarction, and sepsis.
With a large gap of 15.19 percent, these death causes claimed more lives of men than women. For monthly aggregates, only in May did more women die than men, with a slim gap of 2.3 percent.
“The highest cases were in January, with 125 deaths and a gender gap of 20 percent, followed by November and September with 116 cases each, and a gender gap of 6.9 percent and 5.2 percent, respectively,” said Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare.
Meanwhile, among the province’s five municipalities, Sibunag had the biggest reduction in deaths, with -69.66 percent, from 234 fatalities in 2021 to 71 in 2022.

Following Sibunag were Nueva Valencia with a decrement of -38.00 percent, Buenavista with a -22.34 percent decrease, and San Lorenzo with a -12.88 percent decrease, when compared to their 2021 levels.
“Only Jordan had an increase in fatalities in 2022 by 1.17 percent with 520 recorded cases from 514 a year ago,” Losare said. (With a report from Philippine Statistics Authority-Guimaras)/PN
