
GUIMARAS – Inland municipal fisheries production in this island province was recorded at 57.06 metric tons in 2024 – 8.82 percent lower than the 62.58 metric tons posted in 2023.
The top five species caught were tilapia, spade fish, white shrimp, mullet, and tarpon, data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed.
Tilapia had the highest volume of production at 7.38 metric tons, contributing 12.93 percent of the total inland production.
“Its [tilapia] output increased by 12.93 percent from the 8.10 metric tons output in 2023,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
Losare also explained that spade fish production reached 4.90 metric tons making up 8.59 percent of the total inland municipal fisheries production.
“This was an increase from the 2.11 metric tons in 2023,” she added.
Additionally, production of white shrimp was estimated at 4.72 metric tons, reflecting a 6.53 percent decrease; mullet production increased by 31.44 percent; and tarpon recorded 3.91 metric tons, which was 3.69 percent lower than the production in 2023.
On the other hand, inland fisheries value of production accounted an estimated P5.78 million last year, or 31.64 percent lower than the estimated P8.45 million recorded in 2023.
The top five species caught in the inland municipal waters in 2024 in terms of production value were white shrimp, mullet, spade fish, tilapia, and catfish.
White shrimp output was estimated at P947,360, contributing 16.40 percent to the total inland production.
“Its output decreased by 26.36 percent from the estimated P1.2-million output in 2023. Mullet production reached an estimated P698,320 making up 12.09 percent of the total production value,” Losare said./PN
