JORDAN, Guimaras – Guimaras’ iconic landmarks illuminated in vibrant orange as the province launched the 18-day campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) on November 25 at the Provincial Capitol Grounds in Barangay San Miguel, Jordan town.

The campaign’s kick-off, organized by the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 6, featured the symbolic lighting of the Guimaras Governance Center and the “IGuimaras” landmark. The orange glow, the official color of the campaign, aims to raise awareness and spark collective action against violence targeting women and girls.

The activity coincided with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, sending a strong message about the need for safer and more inclusive communities.

Tourism Regional Director Crisanta Marlene Rodriguez emphasized that bringing the campaign to Guimaras reflects efforts to extend the advocacy across Western Visayas.

“Guimaras, known as the mango capital of the Philippines, is a gem that continues to attract visitors. Its iconic ‘IGuimaras’ landmark, a favorite among tourists, now serves a higher purpose, symbolizing the fight to end violence against women,” she said.

This year’s campaign theme, “UNITED for a VAW-Free Philippines,” with the sub-theme “VAW Bigyang Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras!” calls for individuals and institutions to take proactive roles in combating gender-based violence.

Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6 Director Arwin O. Razo, who also chairs the Regional Inter-Agency Committee Against Trafficking and Violence Against Women and their Children (RIACAT-VAWC), revealed that around 2,700 cases of gender-based violence were recorded in Western Visayas during the first quarter of 2024, with 92% of victims being women and girls.

“This event reaffirms our commitment to intensify efforts to protect women and children. The time to act is now, and we must all rise to the challenge of creating a violence-free society,” Razo said.

Key officials, including Gov. JC Rahman A. Nava, Vice Gov. John Edward G. Gando, Provincial Board members Cecile C. Gumarin and Alejandro Araneta, and Guimaras Police Provincial Office Director Police Colonel Rhea Santos, attended the ceremony. Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Region 6 representative Christopher Montaño also expressed support for the initiative.

Running until December 12, the campaign forms part of a nationwide effort backed by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and other advocacy groups. Guimaras’ active participation underscores its dedication to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all./PN
