MANILA – Guimarasnon Lea Denise Belgira added to Team Philippines’ Southeast Asian Games’ medal haul a gold in the women’s downhill mountain bike event.
Belgira topped her event yesterday at the Three Skulls trail in Laurel, Batangas. She clocked three minutes and 9.781 seconds to give the country its first gold in cycling event.
Tiara Andini Prastika of Indonesia settled for a silver medal in 3:16.986, while Thailand’s Vipavee Deekaballes bagged bronze in 3:17.607.
John Derrick Farr and Eleazar Barba, meanwhile, took the gold and silver medals in the men’s downhill mountain bike event later in the day.
The victories of Belgira, Farr and Barba made up for heartbreakers the Filipino cyclists suffered at the start of the competition on Sunday.
Niño Surban and EJ Flores captured silver and a bronze in men’s cross country.
Avegail Rombaon took the bronze in the women’s division while Ilongga Ariana Dormitorio fumbled in her event./PN
