Guimarasnon ‘tanods’ hailed as best in region

GUIMARAS – Village watchmen, or tanods, of Barangay Constancia in San Lorenzo, Guimaras were recognized as the Most Outstanding Barangay Tanod under the 4th–6th class municipality category during the Regional Search for the Outstanding Barangay Tanod and Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentives Awards.

The recognition is the second consecutive win for Barangay Constancia, bringing home a P25,000 cash prize and a plaque.

San Lorenzo vice mayor Constantino Cordero Jr., Constancia punong barangay Alicia Ponce, and Chief Tanod John Rey Lacrite received the award on Monday, Oct. 23, at Festive Walk Mall in Mandurriao, Iloilo City.

Meanwhile, barangay tanods of Salvacion in the municipality of Buenavista were hailed as the first runner-up under the 1st–3rd class municipality category.

Buenavista mayor Samuel T. Gumarin was joined by Barangay Salvacion punong barangay Rommel Infante and Chief Tanod Rico Galve in receiving the plaque and a P15,000 cash prize.

Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Region 6 director Juan Jovian E. Ingeniero, Assistant Regional Director Maria Calpiza Sardua and Negros Occidental governor Eugenio Jose V. Lacson, who is the chairperson of the Regional Peace and Order Council, conferred the award to the winners.

The 2023 Search for Outstanding Barangay Tanod and Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentives Awards is one of the highlights of DILG’s 32nd Local Government Code Anniversary.

The Search for the Outstanding Barangay Tanod was institutionalized to recognize the contribution of volunteer peacekeepers in the barangay.

The nominees were evaluated based on the following criteria: legal basis for the organization of the barangay tanod, organization and functional structure, logistical and financial support, trainings, support facilities and equipment, as well as accomplishments./PN
