Gunmen on wheels shoot Calinog ‘kap’

ILOILO – Two motorcycle-riding men shot the barangay captain of Lonoy, Calinog, Iloilo in the village of Carvasana yesterday.

The 49-year-old Eustaquio Porras died at the Dr. Ricardo S. Provido Memorial District Hospital. He was hit on the left side of his torso.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. Porras was on his way home driving a motorcycle, according to Chief Inspector Remias Pamplona, Calinog police chief.

Citing statements from witnesses, Pamplona said the gunmen appeared to have waited for Porras to pass by the area where they attacked him.

The wounded Porras fell from his motorcycle. The gunmen left after the shooting.

There were reports that Porras managed to fire a shot at his attackers but Pamplona could not confirm this. Responding policemen hadn’t recovered any gun from the victim, he said.

What the cops recovered were empty bullet shells – three from a .9mm pistol and 14 from a .45 pistol.

The Calinog police is exploring all angles as to the motives in Porras’ killing. It could be politics, said Pamplona, citing the barangay election next month.

Porras was also known for being strict in enforcing barangay ordinances, rules and regulations, said Pamplona.

The Calinog police has also not ruled out the possibility that the New People’s Army could be behind the shooting.

Porras was previously ambushed by rebels, said Pamplona./PN
