MANILA – The Philippine Superliga-F2 Logistics suffered a 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 loss to European champion Pomi Casalmaggiore of Italy in the 2016 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship on Thursday night at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Lucis Bosetti led the way with 16 points, on nine attacks, four blocks and three service aces, for the Pomi Casalmaggiore, which clinched a semifinals seat with its 2-1 win-loss slate.
Valentina Tirozzi added 14 markers, on 11 attacks and two service aces, while Samantha Fabris and Jovana Stevanoic had nine markers each for the squad.
Pomi Casalmaggiore jumped to a 14-3 lead early in the opening set, but the PSL-F2 Logistics relied on Stephanie Niemer, Lindsay Stalzer and Jaja Santiago to come to within 16-10.
The PSL-F2 Logistics triumvirate continued with its run as it came to as close as 20-18. But an error by Niemer followed by four straight points from Pomi Casalmaggiore handed them the opening set.
Pomi Casalmaggiore duplicated its strong start in the second frame for a 12-6 lead. Errors from the Philippine squad allowed their opponent to widen the lead further to 18-8
The PSL-F2 Logistics converted consecutive points from Niemer and Santiago to come to within 23-15, but two straight conversions from the Pomi Casalmaggiore, including a booming hit by Fabris gave them a 2-0 set lead.
The PSL-F2 Logistics opened the third set with hits from Stalzer, Kim Fajardo and Jovelyn Gonzaga for an early 8-4 lead. It was later extended to 16-11 on hits by Rachel Anne Daquis and Niemer.
But the Pomi Casalmaggiore leaned on the attacks of Tirrozi to come to within 19-17 before taking the lead at 21-20. Three straight conversions by Tirozzi completed Pomi Casalmaggiore’s sweep victory.
Santiago top-scored with 11 points for the PSL-F2 Logistics, which will end its Pool A action against defending champion Eczacibasi VitrA Istanbul on Friday night. The Manila squad then will end its campaign on the loser’s bracket./PN
