MANILA – Gymnasts Kaitlin Dela Cruz and Reynald Capellan took home a gold medal each for the Philippines after topping their respective events in the 29th Southeast Asian Games yesterday at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Agatha Wong, meanwhile, bounced from a silver-medal finish in the women’s taijijian on Monday evening by bagging the Philippines’ sixth gold medal so far in the taijiquan event.

As of this writing, the Philippines ranks sixth in the standing with six gold, six silver and seven bronze medals, behind Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Dela Cruz, a 17-year-old student at the Epic Charter Home School in Texas, United States, won the women’s uneven bars category with 12.875 points, beating Malaysia’s Tracy Ang (12.550) and Indonesian Rifda Irfanal (12.075).

Her victory was a replication of the feat of her mother Cintamoni, who was an uneven bars gold medalist herself in the 1995 Chiang Mai SEA Games.

Capellan, on the other hand, won the men’s apparatus event with 13.950 points, defeating Malaysian Zul Bahrin Bin Mat Adri (13.750) and Thailand’s Tikumporn Surntornta (13.600).

Fencer Samantha Kyle Catantan settled for silver in women’s foil individual after losing to Amita Marie Nicolette Berthi of Singapore, 15-7. Teammate Maxine Isabel Esteban, meanwhile, took home a bronze medal in the event.

Richard Gonzales also bagged bronze in men’s singles table tennis.

In fencing, Hanniel Abella moved to the championship round in the women’s epee after defeating fellow Filipina Harlene Raquin, who was assured of a bronze medal.

In swimming, Filipina Roxanne Ashley Yu finished eighth in the women’s 100m backstroke finals while Jessie Khing Lacuna placed seventh in the men’s 400m freestyle finale.

In cycling, 2015 gold medalist Marella Salamat finished fourth overall in women’s criterium while Jerry Aquino Jr. also fell short of a podium finish in men’s criterium./PN
