‘Habagat’ affects more families, destroys hundreds of houses in WV

ILOILO City – More families were affected and hundreds of houses were damaged as the southwest monsoon or habagat enhanced by Typhoon “Egay” brought heavy rains which resulted to flooding in Western Visayas.

As of yesterday morning, a total of 24,153 families or 105,017 persons were affected by the inclement weather, data from the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) 6 showed.

Of the figure, 1,563 families or 5,541 persons moved to 63 evacuation centers (ECs) across the region and 224 families or 762 persons were served outside ECs or with their relatives.

The province of Negros Occidental has the most number of affected families at 13,555, or 53,366 persons, from 110 barangays.

Iloilo came in second with 6,435 families or 34,831 individuals affected from 48 barangays; Aklan followed with 2,161 families or 9,661 individuals from 24 barangays; Antique (1,905 families or 6,883 individuals from 98 barangays); and Guimaras (97 families or 276 individuals from eight barangays).

RDRRMC-6 data further showed that a total of 773 damaged houses were reported in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental: 723 partially damaged and 50 totally damaged.

In Iloilo City, as of 3:45 p.m. yesterday, the number of affected or flooded areas has reached 73, data from the Iloilo City Emergency Operations Center showed.

These include 16 barangays in Jaro district, 15 in La Paz, 14 in Mandurriao, 11 in City Proper, nine in Arevalo, five in Molo, and three in Lapuz.

On the other, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 6 and various local governments unit continue to extend assistance to the affected families in the region.

RDRRMC-6 data showed that some P2.3 million worth of assistance have been distributed to the affected families in Aklan, Antique, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

It included 2,845 family food packs and sets of hygiene kits, kitchen kits and sleeping kits./PN
