SAN JOSE, Antique – This capital town has been placed under a state of calamity after heavy rains caused flooding in 16 of its 28 villages.

The Sangguniang Bayan passed Resolution No. 124 on Friday, in response to the recommendation of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO).

The heavy downpour was brought about by the southwest monsoon, or habagat, according to the MDRRMO.

The flood destroyed crops, livestock facilities and other means of living in in San Jose. It also made major roads in the town impassable, the MDRRMO said.

Among those that were severely affected by the flood were barangays Supa, Catungan-Bugarot, Bariri, Durog, Inabasan, and Magcalon, based on data from the MDRRMO and the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO).

A total of 1,169 evacuees had been recorded as of Friday morning.

The local government was also forced to suspend Thursday and Friday classes last week due to the inclement weather.

Mayor Elmer Untaran already directed the MSWDO to coordinate with the Department of Social Welfare and Development Office for augmentation in relief assistance.

San Jose has 28 villages – 13 of which are situated in the coastal area. (With a report from PNA/PN)
