ANTIQUE – The approach of a bridge in Sitio Datu Sumakwel, Barangay Malandog, Hamtic, Antique collapsed past 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17.
A man, whose name was not disclosed, was standing with his motorcycle on the portion of the bridge that collapsed. He sustained minor injuries.
Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) – Hamtic officer Rafael Magbanua said the soil under the structure may have eroded and compromised it.
The bridge was constructed in 2004.
At least seven bridges were damaged in Antique, Aklan and Iloilo after Severe Tropical Storm “Paeng” hit.
On Dec. 2022, the Antique Provincial Engineering Office received reports from residents that the bridge shook whenever vehicles pass through it.
As of this writing, the bride was impassable to all types of vehicles.
The province’s engineering office, meanwhile, assured the public that it would look for funds for its repair.
In the meantime, the provincial government would put up a temporary bridge made of wood and bamboo. (With a report from Radyo Bandera Sweet FM Antique)/PN
