ILOILO City – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Region 6 recently held a three-day training for handlers of drug-sniffing dogs.

The training was held at the PDEA regional office here.

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and Bureau of Customs (BOC) also sent representatives.

According to PDEA regional director Alex Tablate, the training covered the following topics:

* proper handling of K-9 (dogs trained to detect illegal drugs)

* restraint and administration of medications

* narcotics detection

* dog grooming techniques

* first aid

* animal welfare

Tablate said the BJMP and BOC were invited to participate because these two agencies also have programs against drug trafficking.

BJMP conducts surprise inspections of jails with the goal of making all prison facilities drug-free.

The BOC, on the other hand, has been tightening the inspection of goods in various ports./PN
