His whole life, father wore his jacket
And left it near the doorway coming home –
Bus tickets, stickers, a coin in his pocket,
He took with him wherever he would roam.
One afternoon, he left and went to where
No longest bus ride can ever reach;
Where no amount of coins afford the fare,
Nor ring of phones can ever breach.
He left his jacket near the doorway
(Strange to find no man inside);
Small hands tugged at the seams to play
Until it came down, empty, and I cried.
My inner thoughts cry “fill the space,”
And so inwards I push and groan,
And walking out the door to retrace
His steps, I find only my own.
Ticket stubs, stickers I shove in my pocket,
And coins for bus rides to work and home;
Until one afternoon, I’ll forget my jacket
And go wherever all people roam.
Into my jacket little hands will reach,
And cry to find no man inside;
For I will be where calls can’t breach,
And where the buses do not ride.
In my jacket, my steps he’ll trace
Until inside it he has grown –
The son will take the father’s place
And wear the jacket as his own.
