ILOILO City – In response to the recent arrest of 17 illegal Chinese nationals operating a cybersex den in Jaro district – and probably involved in online scams, too – the city government plans to enhance security measures across the city.
This includes establishing checkpoints in every district to monitor the movements of foreigners, said Mayor Jerry Treñas.
The arrested Chinese nationals – all male – were caught in Lawaan Village, Barangay Balantang, Jaro on Nov. 4.
“There has been a significant influx of people in the city, hence we will establish dedicated checkpoints in each district,” Treñas said.
This city has seven districts – Jaro, Mandurriao, Arevalo, Molo, City Proper, Lapuz, and La
Paz.
Treñas admitted he was alarmed though this is the first time that a cybersex den has been discovered in Iloilo City.
The city government will also tie up with the National Bureau of Investigation to address cybercrimes, he added.
“We will liaise with the NBI, as they have the primary knowledge about cybercrimes and they have the resources, too,” said Treñas.
Authorities are investigating the extent of the cybercrime operations of the 17 Chinese nationals.
“This is of national interest…(we will) determine the extent of the organization in Iloilo…the spread of syndicated operations such as this Chinese-operated activity is alarming to us because they are now entering the outside of Metro Manila,” said Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) executive director, Undersecretary Alexander Ramos, last week./PN
