Help Mindanao quake victims, Ilonggos urged

ILOILO – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) urged municipal governments and others in the private sector such as nongovernment organizations to donate to North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

These two areas were hit hard by a series of earthquakes last month.

“We will facilitate the transport of these donations,” said Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr., head of the PDRRMC.

To coordinate other possible assistance to Mindanao, Defensor is meeting with mayors on Nov. 15.

Just this Nov. 7, the PDRRMC approved a resolution extending financial aid to North Cotabato and Davao del Sur.

A P2-million assistance will be extended to North Cotabato and P1 million to Davao del Sur by the provincial government.

Three strong earthquakes jolted in Mindanao last month. These were the following:

* Oct. 16 (6.3 magnitude)

* Oct. 29 (6.6 magnitude)

* Oct. 30 (6.5 magnitude).

The epicenter was in Tulunan, North Cotabato.

A total of 29,619 families in North Cotabato and 8,076 families in Davao del Sur were displaced, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

A total of 21 deaths, 421 injuries and two missing persons were reported in Northern Mindanao (Region X), Davao Region (Region XI), Soccsksargen (Region XII), and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. (With a report from LHC, Capitol News/PN)
