‘Higantes’ to conquer Kalibo Ati-Atihan Festival

KALIBO, Aklan – Higantes will again conquer the streets in celebration of the Ati-Atihan Festival in Kalibo town on January 16.

This year’s theme is “Panublion nga Manggad it Akean, Dungog it bag-ong Henerasyon”.

Higantes and participating local government units (LGUs) will converge in front of ABL Sports Complex Kalibo at 1 p.m. for the parade. The parade route begins at Osmeña Avenue and ends at Kalibo Pastrana Park.

The contest aims to raise awareness in preserving and safeguarding Aklan’s cultural heritage through the collaborative promotional efforts and initiatives.

The higantes will be judged based on creativity and originality (qualities of the higante which reflect the unique and creative imagination of the artist/designer), craftsmanship (aesthetic qualities of the figure and design, beauty, proportion, composition and color scheme, effective use of materials in accordance with the theme) and overall impact.

Higantes measuring with a minimum height of 10 feet and a maximum width of 6 feet must be carried on a platform or cart.

The winners will be announced after the parade at Kalibo Pastrana Park.

The champion will receive P200,000; second placer will get P150,000 and the third placer will take home P120,000.

The fourth placer will receive P100,000 and the fifth placer, P80,000. A consolation prize of P60,000 will be given also by the provincial government of Aklan./PN
