KALIBO, Aklan – Higantes will parade on the streets of this capital town on Jan. 18 as part of this year’s Ati-Atihan Festival.

The higantes, which are made of papier-mâché, reflect the local culture and industry of Aklan.

The Aklan Higante Contest, dubbed as “Pangabuhian it mga Ati,” will be held on the evening of Ati-Atihan Festival’s “Big Three Days,” which leads to the “Kaadlawan it Kapistahan ni Senor Santo Niño.”

The provincial government of Aklan, through the Provincial Tourism Office, organizes the annual higante-making contest.

Towns participating in the contest this year availed themselves of a P30,000 subsidy from the provincial government, according to Provincial Tourism Officer Roselle Ruiz.

On the contest day, the higantes will gather along Mabini Street at 1 p.m. for their sadsad – or street dancing – to Pastrana Park.

The entries will be judged based on their relevance to the theme, audience impact and appeal, and artistry and creativity.

The entries must have a minimum height of eight feet but not more than 12 feet. Their maximum width must be six feet, the organizer said.

The grand winner will receive a P45,000 cash prize while the second and third placers, P40,000 and P35,000, respectively.

The fourth placers will also take home P30,000 while the fifth placer, P25,000.

A P15,000 consolation prize will be given to each of the non-winning higantes. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
