ILOILO City – The Department of Agriculture (DA) in Western Visayan is organizing a dialogue today with hog farmers and traders across the region at the Western Visayas Agriculture and Research Consortium in Jaro district.
Regional Director Remelyn Recoter expressed hope that farmers and traders could come up with a pricing for live hogs that is acceptable to both parties.
Hog raisers recently threatened to stage a “hog holiday” as a form of protest against the low price that traders offer to buy their hogs. They would hold off selling their hogs.
According to the hog raisers, the cost of feeds is rising.
Their asking price per weight of live hog is P150 per kilo.
Recoter said the demand of the hog raisers for better pricing is reasonable.
In DA’s computation, the cost of production now per kilo is P131 – higher than the previous P110 per kilo, she said.
The DA will present its computation to the hog raisers and traders during the dialogue, she added.
Traders will also be given a chance to present their side.
“Ma-eksplikar mn sila sang ila nga side kon ngaa amo na pamakal nila,” said Recoter.
Provincial veterinary offices in the region have been invited to the dialogue./PN
