ILOILO City – Noting the surge in passenger traffic this holiday season, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) Region 6 urged motorists, especially public utility vehicle (PUV) drivers, to adhere to the BLOWBAGETS checklist before driving to avoid road accidents.

According to LTO-6 spokesperson Riza Otayde, the BLOWBAGETS checklist is a crucial tool for everyday driving, helping to safeguard not only drivers’ lives but also those of passengers.

The checklist includes:

* Battery – Ensure the battery has a strong charge and the cable-to-terminal connections are proper.

* Lights – Test headlights, turn signals, brake lights, reverse lights, and tail lights.

* Oil – Check the engine’s oil level and color, and look for any leaks.

* Water – Verify the radiator water level to prevent overheating.

* Brakes – Ensure brakes are functioning properly to avoid accidents.

* Air – Maintain correct tire pressure to prevent accidents and improve fuel economy.

* Gas – Check the fuel level through the fuel gauge to avoid running out on the road.

* Engine – Listen for any unusual noises and consult a mechanic if necessary.

* Tires – Inspect tires for bulges, bumps, and other signs of damage.

* Self – Assess whether you are physically and emotionally fit to drive. Also, remember to carry your license and registration papers.

Otayde said the Theoretical Driving Course offered by LTO covers the BLOWBAGETS checklist, ensuring that drivers are well-versed in these safety measures before obtaining their licenses.

“This checklist serves as a reminder of the steps we should take each time we get into our vehicles, and it’s particularly vital to be in the right condition for driving, especially during the holiday season,” Otayde added.

Otayde also stresses the importance of being in the correct mental and physical state for driving, advising against driving while tired or under the influence of alcohol.

These reminders from LTO-6 are especially important in the wake of a tragic accident at the notorious “killer curve” in Barangay Igbucagay, Hamtic, Antique. On Dec. 5, a bus accident claimed 18 lives, including the driver, two inspectors, and a conductor.

Regular Inspections by LTO

Otayde said LTO personnel have been consistently conducting inspections on roads and at transport terminals to ensure vehicle safety. This holiday season, these inspections are expected to become more frequent, with a focus on the physical condition of vehicles, including tires, brakes, and lights.

“If our personnel find any defects, the vehicle is not permitted to travel,” Otayde said. “Only vehicles that pass our inspection are allowed to proceed.”

Otayde also announced plans to intensify vehicle inspections during renewal and registration periods. LTO personnel will rigorously examine the physical condition of vehicles. Any vehicle with defects is denied renewal.

Before visiting the LTO for renewal or registration, vehicles are required to undergo an inspection at LTO-accredited private motor vehicle inspection centers. These inspections cover both the above carriage (including body appearance, chassis, engine, handles, etc.) and the undercarriage (engine bracket, engine leakage, alignment, brakes, speedometer, emission test, etc.).

“If a vehicle is found to be not roadworthy, we prohibit the continuation of the renewal process,” Otayde said./PN
