House approves 20% discount on travel tax for elderly, PWDs

MANILA – The House of Representatives on Monday approved on third and final reading the bill that provides a 20-percent travel tax discount to senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

Voting 178-0, the chamber approved House Bill 8884, which also exempts individuals who represent the country in international competitions from paying travel tax.

The measure, principally authored by Laguna Representative Arlene Arcillas, primarily aims to provide additional benefits to senior citizens and PWDs, as well as to give incentive to students, athletes, academic participants and pageant contestants who bring honor to the country.

Under the bill, students who represent their schools and the country in international sports tournaments and academic competitions are exempted from paying travel tax.

Also exempted from paying the said tax are Philippine representatives to academic conferences and competitions abroad, international sports competitions, and international beauty pageants.

Aside from this measure, the chamber also approved on final reading House Bill 8885, which institutionalizes the grant of 20-percent student fare discount. (GMA News)
