KALIBO, Aklan – Rep. Carlito Marquez wants the Kalibo-Altavas national highway renamed.
House Bill No. 1535 seeks to change the name of the 47.587-kilometer Aklan East Road into “Congressman Allen Salas Quimpo National Road.”
Marquez’s bill is now pending with the House committee on public works and highways.
The proposed Quimpo Road starts from the Kalibo-Banga-New Washington junction in Barangay Andagao here up to the Aklan-Capiz boundary in Altavas.
“The late Quimpo expedited the release of funds for the upgrading and complete paving of the entire road segment of the Kalibo highway,” Marquez said. “Before, the highway was still known as ‘abortion road’ for the commuters and the transport of products and goods.”
The highway connects Kalibo to the eastern towns of Banga, Balete, Batan, and Altavas.
Along it are barangays Poblacion, Andagao, Estancia, Tigayon, and Linabuan Norte in Kalibo; Linabuan Sur, Jumarap, Mambog, Poblacion, Tabayon, Libas, and Venturanza in Banga; Fulgencio, Feliciano, Calizo, Morales, Poblacion, Cortes, and Aranas in Balete; Lalab and Cabugao in Batan; and Cabugao, Linayasan, Odiong, Poblacion, Man-up, and Cabangila in Altavas.
Quimpo served as vice mayor of this capital town from 1980 to 1988; mayor from 1988 to 1992; and congressman from 1992 to 2001. He died of pancreatic cancer in December 2016.
“Quimpo was an acknowledged political icon who reigned over the political, social and economic landscape of Aklan during his time,” Marquez said. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
