House OKs bill seeking university status to Negros state college

BACOLOD City – The House of Representatives approved on third and final reading a bill that seeks to convert Carlos Hilado Memorial State College (CHMSC) in Talisay City, Negros Occidental into a university.

The lower chamber passed House Bill (HB) No. 7081 on Monday. The measure – if signed into law by President Rodrigo Duterte – will change the name of CHMSC to “Carlos Hilado Memorial State University.”

CHMSC’s main campus is in Talisay City. It has satellite campuses in this capital city and in Binalbagan town.

Bacolod lone district representative Greg Gasataya filed HB No. 7081 at the House last year.

In August 2018, Sen. Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV also filed the measure’s Senate counterpart – Senate Bill No. 1919 – which is still pending approval.

CHMSC director for external affairs Rhoderick Samonte said they were “happy” with the latest development at the House.

But he added they still have to secure all requirements set by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) before the state college turns into a university.

Wala pa na sa joint committee with the Senate…We still have to comply with the CHED requirements,” Samonte stressed.

Among the requirements are improved facilities and additional research and academic programs.

Samonte said CHED is monitoring the upgrade that the school is undergoing./PN
