House panel OKs bills on Aklan public holidays

KALIBO, Aklan – Two bills on local public holidays in the province of Aklan were approved by the House Committee on Local Government in the 19th Congress.

The referred bills of Aklan 2nd District’s Cong. Teodorico Haresco Jr. and Aklan 1st District’s Cong. Carlito Marquez got the approval of the committee on Aug. 16, 2022 during its organizational meeting.

House Bill No. 1373 authored by Haresco seeks to declare every 31st of July as a special non-working public holiday in Tangalan, Aklan to be known as “Tangalan Day”.

Tangalanons celebrate the separation of this town from Makato, Aklan after then President Elpidio Quirino signed a law on July 31, 1948 creating the municipality of Tangalan.

“Tangalanons on this day showcase their culture, talents in art, socioeconomic values, ingenuity and self-determination that mark themselves as a unique society. The people also commemorate the heroism of their ancestors of then Battle of Vivo of 1897,” Haresco said,

On the other hand, the committee also approved House Bill No. 3002 authored by Marquez, declaring Nov. 3 of every year as special non-working public local holiday in Kalibo, Aklan to be known as “Kalibo Foundation Day”.

The capital town of Kalibo was founded on Nov. 3, 1571 under the encomienda system during the time of Governor Miguel Lopes de Legaspi.

“This will be a time to reflect on the past, to remember their forefathers, and to revisit the ideas that led to the formation Kalibo as a town,” Marquez pointed out.
