ILOILO – The Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) has begun preparations for a disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) summit this July 31 in Pototan town.
PDRRMO head Cornelio Salinas convened a coordination meeting recently to lay the groundwork for the summit. The meeting brought together representatives from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Pototan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), and the local government unit of Pototan.
Discussions during the meeting focused on various logistical aspects such as the venue for a tree planting activity, traffic management, and budget allocations for the summit.
A key highlight of the summit will be the showcase of DRRM assets and the resource capabilities of local government units (LGUs) to demonstrate their readiness and equipment for responding to emergencies and calamities like floods, typhoons, landslides, and earthquakes.
Dr. Alfonso R. Baldonado III, Chief of the Administrative and Training Division of the PDRRMO, proposed a motorcade from the capitol grounds to Pototan to display these assets and capabilities prominently.
Additionally, the summit will feature the distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials, such as billboards, with vital information on various disaster scenarios including floods, typhoons, landslides, storm surges, and vehicular accidents.
There is also a planned tree-planting activity involving government agencies like the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Public Works and Highways.
Salinas emphasized the importance of the DRRM summit, stating that it aims to raise awareness about disaster risks and preparedness measures. The event also seeks to bring together stakeholders and experts to share knowledge and best practices in disaster risk reduction and management.
The summit is expected to be attended by personnel from MDRRMOs across 43 LGUs in the province as well as volunteers./PN
