HUA SIONG College of Iloilo Red Phoenix retained their title in the 2018 Iloilo Schools Sports Association Meet secondary boys basketball.

The Red Phoenix completed a two-game sweep of the best-of-three championship series after a 66-56 win over St. Robert’s International Academy Panda Rockets on Wednesday at the Western Institute of the Technology gym in Iloilo City.

Led by veterans Reynold Tupas, Lee Yanzi Jimera, Reniel Gamboa, and Paolo Villariza, the Red Phoenix dominated the Panda Rockets from start to finish the tournament unbeaten.

“The boys really worked hard for this championship,” said Red Phoenix head coach Vincent Conlu. “Some might say that it was just easy because we were unbeaten, but we also had our struggles. And I am glad we were able to overcome them.”

Also part of the Red Phoenix were Carlo Paguntalan, Richie Galvez, JJ Gerochi, Trenz Tantia, Mico Exaltado, Lorenzo Yu, Jims Jimiera, EJ Dogelio, and Victor Palileo.

DOCTORS’ CLOSE TO TITLE

Meanwhile, Iloilo Doctors’ College moved closer to claiming the tertiary men basketball title after a come-from-behind 79-76 win over John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University.

After falling behind in the first half, Doctors’ banked on the exploits of Jade Bryan Jardio in the second half to turn things around. The Gerardo Mosqueda-mentored team can clinch the crown in Game 2 Friday night.

In elementary boys’ basketball, Hua Siong College of Iloilo needed just one more win to take the crown after a 52-40 victory over University of San Agustin in Game 1. Jake Guara led Hua Siong’s attack with 13 points./PN
