BACOLOD City – The number of human trafficking cases recorded in this city last year has alarmed the City Council’s committee on women and gender, family and childcare.
The committee revealed yesterday that based on the data it has obtained, there were 10 cases of human trafficking here in 2023 and the victims were minors.
“Bisan isa lang ka kaso is alarming na because we should have zero tolerance for abused of women, children and any other person,” CouncilOR Celia Flor, committee chairperson, said during the city government’s observance of the World Day Against Trafficking 2024 at the lobby of the Bacolod City Government Center yesterday.
Also joining the event with the theme, “Iisang Nasyon, Iisang Aksyon. Sa Bagong Pilipinas, Tapusin ang Human Trafficking Ngayon,” were punong barangays and non-government organizations, among others.
The city councilor reminded barangay officials that it is part of their job to work closely with the city government to prevent this kind of crime.
“We should have measures in place to prevent trafficking in persons especially in barangays,” she said.
She added: “Ang barangay officials ang frontline sang community. Sila nag pinaka-strategic naton nga persons nga magpahibalo sa aton community sang sini nga kampanya kag ini nga issue, kag sila man ang may daku nga role.”
Among the activities yesterday were advocacy walk, World Day Against Trafficking forum and signing of the pledge of commitment by the participants./PN
