KALIBO, Aklan – Two Bureau of Immigration employees were facing human trafficking charges.

Provincial Prosecutor Maya Tolentino identified the Immigration officers as Faisah Rosales Pandita and Maria Mikhaila Mabulay.

Both natives of Cagayan de Oro City, they were “arrested [during] a rescue operation for four overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) from Luzon,” Tolentino told a news conference on Wednesday. “They (workers) were supposed to board a plane bound for Malaysia at the Kalibo International Airport.”

According to Tolentino, the Immigration officers were “observed to be not following proper procedures in documenting OFWs.”

“They were given until Jan. 31 to explain why they should not be charged,” said the provincial prosecutor.

Four other people, including the workers’ alleged illegal recruiter and cohorts, were arrested.

The operation was staged after two of the would-be overseas workers reported to the local Department of Labor and Employment office about what they alleged the suspicious process of their hiring.

The municipal police, the airport police and the Interagency Council Against Trafficking conducted the operation on Jan. 19. (PNA)
