ILOILO City – The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is deploying “hundreds” of policemen to keep the 2017 Palarong Pambansa in Antique peaceful and orderly.

The province is hosting the annual national games among students for the first time. The 60th edition of the Palaro opens on April 23 and wraps up on the 29th.

For security reasons, the PRO-6 declined to disclose the specific number of police officers it would be mobilizing.

Deployment starts tomorrow to augment the police force of the Antique Police Provincial Office, said Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, spokesperson of the PRO-6.

Aside from the competition venues, policemen will be guarding the Palaro delegates’ billeting areas.

Aside from Antique’s capital town, San Jose, other municipalities hosting the delegates are Sibalom, Tobias Fornier, Bugasong, Anini-y, Belison, and Patnongon.

Delegates are coming from 18 regions.

“We have enough police personnel to secure the athletes, coaches, tourists, and spectators,” said Gorero.

These policemen were also the officers who kept the recent meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Iloilo City and Boracay Island peaceful, he added.

Palarong Pambansa is the country’s biggest inter-school (public and private) sports competition organized by the Department of Education. It started in 1948.

Some delegates arrived in San Jose as early as April 7.

President Rodrigo Duterte was expected to lead the opening ceremony.

On Monday, Leonito Montano of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines informed Gov. Rhodora Cadiao that the Evelio B. Javier (EBJ) Memorial Airport in San Jose accommodate the special flights for the Palaro.

Montano said representatives of Philippine Airlines will inspect the airport’s runway to determine what plane to utilize for the special flights.

For student-athletes, Palarong Pambansa is the culmination of school sports competitions, which start with local school intramurals, followed by the congressional district, provincial, and regional athletic meets.

The objectives of the Palaro are:

* To promote Physical Education and sports as an integral part of the Basic Education curriculum for holistic development of the youth;

* Inculcate the spirit of discipline, teamwork, excellence, fair play, solidarity, sportsmanship, and other values inherent in sports;

* Promote and achieve peace by means of sports;

* Widen the base for talent identification, selection, recruitment, training and exposure of elementary pupils and secondary students to serve as a feeder to the National Sports Association (NSA) for international competitions; and

* Provide a database for a valid and universal basis to further improve the school sports development programs./PN
