ILOILO – Blame it on the firecrackers.

At a residential subdivision in Barangay Balabag, Pavia town a 37-year-old Hungarian national was shot on New Year’s Day.

Da’niel Melczer, whose wife was an Ilongga, died at the rural health center of the town, police said.

A suspect had been identified and arrested – Melczer’s neighbor at Avida Subdivision, Lucindo Lim, a 42-year-old seaman.

Around 1 a.m. prior to the shooting, Melczer and Lim had a confrontation.

The foreigner did not like firecrackers exploding in his neighborhood, said Senior Inspector Rey Cordero, Pavia police chief.

Lim was setting off firecrackers in front of his house to welcome the New Year, Cordero said, but this upset Melczer who was rudely awakened by the explosions.

“There was a heated argument between the two,” said Cordero.

Melczer died of gunshot wounds on the forehead, right knee and left hand, according to Chief Inspector Hilarion Roga of the police’s Scene of the Crime Operatives.

Responding police officers recovered from the crime scene a .9mm pistol and seven empty shells, and a .45 handgun.

Lim’s gun was licensed, said Cordero. The suspect also surrendered it to the police.

Lim declined to issue a statement. He told the police he was willing to face whatever charges would be filed against him.

“His firearm was licensed. We will likely file a homicide complaint,” said Cordero.

It was unclear if the subdivision had rules governing the setting off of firecrackers./PN
