ILOILO City – A two-day gun ban will be imposed on Feb. 19 and 20 to keep the 45th Paraw Regatta peaceful and orderly.

The regatta – a race of wind-propelled double outrigger sailboats called paraw – wraps up on Feb. 19 but the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) deemed it wise to extend the gun ban for another day. Celebrations may extend up to the wee hours of the 20th, it explained.

Paraw Regatta is the oldest sailing event in Asia.

The gun ban will cover Arevalo district only, clarified Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, ICPO spokesperson.

The regatta and side activities will be concentrated in Arevalo, specifically on the shores of Villa Beach.

“I appeal to the public. Please observe the two-day gun ban. All permits to carry firearms outside of residence will be suspended,” said Sangrines.

ICPO will also be deploying hundreds of policemen and force multipliers to Arevalo.

“Maximum police visibility and deployment in Arevalo district will hopefully discourage criminal elements from striking,” said Sangrines.

Beach resorts and restaurants in Arevalo will be crawling with cops.

“We will also have police personnel in civilian clothes roaming around,” said Sangrines./PN
