SAGAY City — Five fishermen allegedly encroaching the Sagay Marine Reserve here have been arrested.

Bantay Dagat operatives under SPO1 Enrique Katalbas caught Gani Jagonos, Carling Cordova, Edmund Ocalina, and brothers Vicente and Marvie Carton engaging in fishing at the marine sanctuary.

All fishermen were residents of Brgy. Molocaboc here.

Confiscated from them were a compressor, a kilo of assorted fish, two flashlights and a spear.

The Sagay Marine Reserve is a protected area established in 1999 to protect marine life in Carbin and Maca reefs.

The marine sanctuary is home to a wide variety of underwater species, including turtles, large schools of fish and thriving corals./PN
