ILOILO City – Public help is crucial in the campaign against illegal gambling thus the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO) has opened a hotline through which informants can alert policemen.
The IPPO may be reached through mobile number 09985560224.
Two more hotlines will be made public soon, said Senior Superintendent Harold Tuzon, IPPO director.
Tuzon recently formed a Special Operations Group (SOG) tracker team to run after illegal gambling operators.
“Our campaign against illegal gambling is just as serious as our drive against illegal drugs,” said Tuzon.
Aside from “bookies”, policemen are also targeting illegal cock derbies, perhayan (fiesta carnivals), even streetside card games and tumbô.
President Rodrigo Duterte recently issued Executive Order (EO) No. 13 stepping up the fight against illegal gambling.
He ordered the Philippine National Police, the National Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement agencies to coordinate with the Department of Justice, Department of Interior and Local Government and Department of Information and Communications Technology.
The presidential order also directed law enforcement agencies concerned to coordinate and promptly act on requests of gambling regulatory authorities to investigate and put a stop to illegal gambling activities in their respective jurisdictions.
To further prod policemen, the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is imposing a “one-strike” policy. A police station chief will be sacked if another police unit makes a successful anti-illegal gambling operation in his turf.
According to Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesperson, a city or provincial police director will be relieved from his post, too, if three of his police station chiefs are sacked due to the one-strike policy.
“They will be held accountable for their police chief’s lackluster performance,” he stressed./PN
