MANILA –Vice Mayor John Paul Alvarez of Ilog, Negros Occidental has sought Sandiganbayan’s approval for his nine-day trip to Japan with his family on Holy Week.
In a five-page manifestation and travel motion filed on Wednesday, Alvarez said he will be accompanied by his wife Joyce and son John Paulo at the Kansai Region of Japan from March 26 to April 3.
Alvarez also noted that he is not a flight risk since he has “no derogatory travel record nor has he failed to appear without valid reason during the entire trial stage of the instant case.”
“With the kind permission of this honorable court, accused intends to travel for the aforementioned period of nine days to the Kansai Region of Japan, which includes the cities of Kyoto and Osaka,” Alvarez said.
He added, “Accused’s planned trip is purely on his personal account and expense. It would not be charged to any public or government fund. The accused also intend to return to the country to serve his constituents in the town of Ilog.”
The Office of the Ombudsman has accused Alvarez and eight other government employees of violating Section 3(e) of Republic Act 3019, or the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
Alvarez was still Ilog’s mayor when the Ombudsman charged him.
The case stemmed from the alleged unlawful repair and replacement of the Department of Education’s service vehicle in the town.
Alvarez allegedly approved the release of P100,000 for the repair of a Mitsubishi Pajero, which did not materialize.
Alvarez was also tagged before in the killing of Kabankalan Judge Henry Arles in 2012. A year later, the Department of Justice dismissed the case due to lack of evidence./PN
