MANILA – Softball teams from Iloilo and Bacolod cities salvaged a gold medal each as the 2016 Batang Pinoy National Championship ended at the DavNor Sports and Tourism Complex in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

The Ilonggo team captured the 13-and-under championship after a lopsided victory over the Cebu team. Pasig City, meanwhile, settled for a bronze medal.

Prior to the gold medal conquest, the Iloilo team won two of three elimination-round matches against Carmen (13-3) and Lupon (23-1). Their lone loss was against Cebu City (1-0).

Meanwhile the Bacolod squad ruled the 17-and-under event after beating the Bulacan team in the knockout championship match. The Tanauan squad was second runner-up.

The Bacolodnons swept their way to back-to-back championships after dominating Sultan Kudarat (14-0), Tagum City (8-2), General Santos City (7-0), and Tanauan City (7-2).

Iloilo City was also declared overall champion in arnis — the Philippines’ national sport and martial art — after bagging 12 medals: five gold, six bronze and a silver.

Malay, Aklan native Sheila Talja captured a gold medal in the women’s long jump with 5.61 meters. Ilongga Elvy Villagoniza, meanwhile, settled for bronze.

“Thanks sa tanan nga nag-pray para sa akon. Thanks din kay Lord, sa parents ko at sa coach ko (Michael Quinto) na tumulong at sumuporta sa akon para madaog dito,” Talja told Panay News.

Also making a last-minute push for a gold medal was the Aklanon Kirk Aisne Sim Caldeo, who captured the top spot in the boy’s shot put. Ilongga Renata Marfa placed second in the 100m hurdles.

Bacolod City native Angel Ann Pranisa, meanwhile, settled for a silver medal finish in the 13-15 girls 100m run. Finishing first was Samantha Limos of the University of Cebu.

Other Western Visayas athletes who bagged bronze medals were Aklanon Ponce Juenz Cabungkal (100m sprint) and Negrense Franzine Alamo (girls’ 13-15 long jump).

Finishing as overall champion in the weeklong event is Cebu City with 42 gold, 30 silver and 31 bronze medals, while Baguio City won second place with 38 gold, 30 silver and 30 bronze medals./PN
