ILOILO City – “We were amazing!”
Said Atty. Pablo Nava IV, president of the Federation of Iloilo Cycling Organizations, on Monday celebrating the “spirit of volunteerism and involvement” of Ilonggos who joined the attempt to break the world record for longest single line of moving bicycles, despite falling short of the feat by just a few dozen participants.
“We were amazing! One biking community Iloilo. Thank you to all who participated for your spirit of volunteerism and involvement, [enduring the] scorching heat of the sun and all,” expressed Nava. “Hala bira sikad, padyak pa more! Padayon Iloilo!”
Organizers of the event recorded 1,255 registered participants in Saturday’s attempt to go down in the Guinness Book of World Records for longest line of moving bicycles – well above the 1,186 record set in Dhaka, Bangladesh in December last year.
However, upon the verification of cyclists’ plate numbers and barcodes, only 1,201 participants were scanned at the starting point and just 1,147 finished the entire course.
During the Grand Fun Ride, each biker was assigned a unique race plate with a corresponding barcode to make the recording of participants easier. Each race plate was scanned for verification before entering the starting point and after passing the finish line.
To break the world record, the number of scanned plates needed to exceed the current record, both at the start and finish of the course.
“Some bikes broke down. Some bikers strayed out of the line. But the number of participants was really huge,” said Ronald Raymond Sebastian, 2017 Iloilo Bike Festival director.
However, some of the Ilonggo and Ilongga riders who joined the event are remaining upbeat, even excited to redeem themselves in a potential next attempt at breaking the world record.
“We can do this again soon! Kaya ta ni ah. Thanks and we recognize the efforts of the organizing committee! Soon to be broken. We believe we will!” said David de Leon, president of the Centralian Cruisers Cycling Club.
“Congrats Iloilo Bike Festival!! We joined last Saturday and it was amazing. Next year ulit,” expressed a hopeful Mally Ga of the Augustinian Cyclist Club. “But please note next time, don’t make two separate activities on the same time. It could have been more if wala natunga ang bikers. Still congratulations to everyone!”/PN

Ilonggo cyclists line up their bikes, enduring the heat of the sun, during the attempt to set a new world record for the longest single line of moving bicycles on Saturday. The cyclists fell short of the feat by just a few dozen participants, but the blow hasn’t dampened their spirit. Some Ilonggo riders are already bracing to redeem themselves in a potential next attempt at breaking the world record. IAN PAUL CORDERO/PN
