ILOILO – The provincial government is evaluating the status of rivers in Iloilo.
About a month ago, Gov. Arthur Defensor Sr. ordered the suspension of the processing of new permits for river quarry operations.
With the help of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, capitol will check what rivers may still be quarried and which ones should be protected from any quarry operation.
“Too much and unregulated quarrying may result in serious damage to our environment,” stressed the governor. “We should act on this before it gets too late,”
Defensor clarified that his order doesnot coverongoing river quarry operations and mountain quarry operations.
“We are also making sure the needs of contractors engaged in the construction business, especially in the concreting of roads, will not be affected,” he said.
There are more or less 140 quarry operators in the province: 90 into river quarrying and 55 in mountain quarrying./PN
