Iloilo City Council approves 40% RPT discount extension

BY GEROME DALIPE IV

ILOILO City – The City Council has passed an ordinance extending the 40 percent Real Property Tax (RPT) discount on land until 2026. The unanimous approval took place during the council’s final special session of 2023 on Dec. 27.

Mayor Jerry Treñas lauded the council’s decision, describing it as a significant step towards inclusive governance that prioritizes residents’ welfare.

“The extension addresses the concerns of property owners and taxpayers, particularly in light of adjustments to RPT based on updated market values. We also encourage all taxpayers to settle their RPT for 2025 before December 31 to avail an additional 10% discount,” Treñas said.

The ordinance seeks to alleviate the financial burden on property owners while ensuring the timely payment of taxes.

Earlier, Treñas announced the two-year extension of the 40 percent RPT discount, which will provide financial relief to landowners and businesses until 2026.

“The Iloilo City Government is committed to fostering inclusive and responsive governance that prioritizes the welfare of our constituents. In line with this, I am pleased to announce that the 40% discount on Real Property Tax for land will be extended until 2026,” he said.

Tax relief for economic resilience

Treñas emphasized that the extension is designed to help property owners adapt to revised RPT rates based on updated market values.

“This tax relief reflects the city’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its stakeholders while bolstering economic resilience,” he added.

The mayor also pointed out that this initiative aligns with the city government’s mission to create a business-friendly environment and promote sustainable growth in Iloilo City.

To facilitate compliance, taxpayers can utilize offsite payment centers, provided they have their receipt from the previous year.

Additionally, starting December 16, payment counters at City Hall will extend their operating hours – 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Treñas reiterated the importance of fulfilling tax obligations, noting “Taxes are the lifeblood of government operations. While this extension provides much-needed financial relief to taxpayers, I continue to appeal to everyone to pay promptly.”

The initiative underscores the city government’s commitment to inclusive governance, economic stability, and the welfare of its constituents./PN
