ILOILO City – The city government has reiterated its call for vigilance among motel owners and operators in preventing activities that exploit minors.
Nestor Canong, head of the Iloilo City Task Force on Moral and Values Formation, emphasized the importance of complying with City Ordinance No. 2015-447, which explicitly prohibits motels and similar establishments from admitting minors without adult supervision.
The ordinance is designed to protect minors from potential exploitation and abuse.
Random inspections have been carried out in KTV bars, nightclubs, and entertainment venues, particularly in Jaro and Mandurriao districts.
The taskforce also visited taxi operators and garages, advising drivers to refuse transportation for minors heading to prohibited places like motels.
Additionally, meetings with motel owners and staff in the Arevalo district and other areas have been conducted to orient them about the ordinance and encourage strict compliance.
Past inspections have consistently reminded establishments, including motels, lodging houses, and inns, of their responsibilities under the law.
Canong also urged couples visiting popular areas like Sunset Boulevard to adhere to regulations, highlighting the Sunset Boulevard Task Force’s enforcement of curfews and liquor bans for minors.
Taskforce members are also monitoring activities under the bridge for potential ordinance violations.
“Please monitor the activities of our minors today. We all know how impressionable our youth are,” Canong said.
He further warned predators against exploiting minors or bringing them to secluded areas.
“Let’s hope for a peaceful celebration of Valentine’s Day to ensure everyone’s well-being,” he added, urging the public to respect the innocence and dignity of children.
Pursuant to City Ordinance No. 2015-447, establishments are not allowed to admit minors (under 18) without adult supervision.
A minor cannot be alone with a non-relative in private areas like motel rooms, inns, or cubicles.
Adults who are not family members and have a 10-year or more age difference with minors are prohibited from accompanying them in motels, bars, or similar establishments.
Violators of the ordinance could face fines up to P5,000, imprisonment of up to one year, and cancellation of business permits.
Establishments are also required to display notices such as “No Entry/Admittance of Minors” in conspicuous areas.
Mayor Jerry Trenas noted the city government remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguard minors from harm, exploitation, and abuse, while encouraging responsible celebration during occasions like Valentine’s Day./PN
