Iloilo City eyes state of calamity due to ‘Paeng’

ILOILO City – This southern city is mulling to declare a state of calamity due to the effects of Tropical Storm “Paeng”.

“As soon as we can declare a state of calamity, will provide financial assistance from our calamity funds of P10,000 to all families with totally damaged houses and P7,000 to all families with partially damaged houses,” said Mayor Jerry P. Treñas who chairs the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CRDRRMC).

Based on the report of the Iloilo City DRRM Office, a total 1,593 families composed of 6,754 individuals from 55 barangays in the city were affected by the typhoon.

Also, data showed that 342 houses in the metropolis were partially damaged while 167 were totally damaged.

Based on the report of respective barangay DRRMCs, a total of 30 barangays in the city were flooded.

These include Sto. Niño Sur, Yulo, So-oc, and Sto. Domingo in Arevalo; Sinikway in Lapuz; Bonifacio Tanza and Concepcion in City Proper; Boulevard and Katilingban in Molo; Pali Benedicto, PHHC Block 17, San Rafael, Hibao-an Norte, Tabucan, Navais, Q. Abeto, Hibao-an Sur, Calahunan, and Oñate de Leon in Mandurriao; San Isidro, Camalig, Dungon B, Desamparados, Lopez Jaena, Benedicto, Cuartero, Simon Ledesma, Tagbac, and Tabuc Suba in Jaro; and San Isidro in La Paz.

Meanwhile, the city government through the City Social Welfare and Development Office has been providing food assistance to all affected families.

The city mayor said most of the affected families have been listed in the 15,000 families that the city needs to relocate.

He specifically thanked former senator Franklin Drilon and Iloilo City’s Rep. Julienne “Jamjam” Baronda for the 10 low-rise buildings they have facilitated for the city which will provide the city with a total of 600 units.

“We are prioritizing those to be relocated and will continue to look for ways to have more relocation sites for them,” Treñas added.

On the other hand, aside from the city government, Uswag IIonggo Partylist has also started providing financial assistance to all typhoon-affected families.

A financial assistance of P5,000 is given to each family with totally damaged houses and P3,000 to each family with partially damaged houses through the Department of Social Welfare and Development./PN
