Iloilo City gov’t bans entry of live poultry

ILOILO City – This southern city is joining other local government units in Western Visayas in banning the entry of poultry and poultry products from Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region.

In his Executive Order No. 41-A amending his previous order, Mayor Jerry Treñas  ordered the prohibition of the entry of live birds, poultry and non-poultry, in Iloilo City effective immediately until May 7.

“There is a need to protect the poultry industry in Panay Island and the general public from the effects of Avian Influenza,” read part of Treñas’ EO.

The ban is temporary and covers live birds (poultry and non-poultry) and egg products such as table eggs, salted eggs, quail eggs, and embryonated eggs or balut.

“The Iloilo City Veterinary Office has determined that the entry of egg products shall be likewise banned to ensure protection from contamination and contagion,” part of the EO read.

The ban encompasses all species of live birds (poultry and non-poultry) except day-old breeder chicks, day-old pullets, and hatching eggs horn from the entire Luzon.

Also, day-old breeder chicks, day-old pullets, ready-to-lay pullets and hatching eggs shall only be sourced from farms located in Avian Influenza disease  incidence-free municipality/city and must comply shipping permit requirements.

A temporary ban on the following is also established:

* transport / movement of pigeon for racing, flying, training, breeding, and other related activities;

* transport / movement of gamefowls from mainland Luzon and affected cities / municipalities in Mindanao for cockfighting and other related activities;

* transport / movement of gamefowls from MIMAROPA, Visayas and non-affected cities / municipalities in Mindanao to mainland Luzon is allowed. However, due to the dynamic Avian Influenza  situation in mainland Luzon and affected cities / municipalities in Mindanao, transport / movement of gamefowls back to MIMAROPA, Visayas and non-affected areas in Mindanao is prohibited;

* the transport of live ducks from mainland Luzon and affected areas in Mindanao for purposes of grazing; and

* transport/movement of live ducks and quails from Bulacan, Pampanga,Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Bataan, Laguna, Camarines Sur, Benguet, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, and Davao del Sur./PN
