Iloilo City Gov’t denies role in pro-Duterte candle lighting event

ILOILO City – The Iloilo City Government has refuted claims circulating on social media that it was involved in organizing a candle lighting ceremony reportedly held by supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Mayor Jerry Treñas clarified that while a permit was granted for a prayer rally, no city government officials participated in the event.

“A permit was requested for a prayer rally, but no city government officials were involved. From what I know, it was organized by Duterte supporters,” Treñas said.

Duterte is currently detained at the custodial facility of the International Criminal Court in The Hague, Netherlands where he awaits trial for the charge of crimes against humanity over his administration’s bloody drug war.

Treñas stressed that the city government did not conduct any official candle lighting or prayer gathering and distanced his administration from any political activities.

“I am not aware of where this claim originated, but it is false. The city government did not lead this event,” he added.

Treñas explained that the city government approves permits for gatherings provided they adhere to regulations and remain peaceful.

“We grant permits to those who apply, as long as they follow the proper process and maintain peace,” he said.

The mayor also urged the public to verify information before sharing it online to prevent the spread of misinformation.

“I encourage everyone to be cautious about the information they share and avoid spreading falsehoods,” Treñas said./PN
