Iloilo City Gov’t wary on health effects of Kanlaon eruption

ILOILO CITY – The city government is preparing for the possible effects of the Kanlaon Volcano eruption in the city.

Donna Magno, head of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), however, said the wind direction that brings sulfur is going north and not in Iloilo City based on the latest update of Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS).

“In case nga may ashfall kuno ang direction naman southwest going to northeast. So hopefully hindi kita matam-an diri granting nga hindi na gid maglala ang sitwasyon sa may Kanlaon,” Magno said

She also said that they will conduct an air quality test in the city but they will consult first with the Department of Science and Technology Region 6.

The City Health Office (CHO), for its part, reminded the public of the following:

• limit going out of the house

• make sure the windows and doors are closed

• wear face mask and googles

• avoid rubbing eyes

• avoid eating food exposed with ash

• wash fruits and vegetables before consuming

• make sure to close your water source like deep wells

The CHO also encourage the residents to be alert and be prepared.

“Hopefully hindi gid kita matam-an no. If we can recall, ang pinakamalala nga na-experience naton nga nakalabot diri ang iya pa sang Pinatubo. So we don’t want that same experience nga maliwat,” Magno added./PN
