ILOILO City – This southern city was the biggest winner among the local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas, bagging a total of six awards – all ranking first – in the 6th Regional Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index (CMCI) for Competitive LGUs.

No less than Mayor Jerry P. Treñas, accompanied by other local city officials, received the awards from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) during the recent awarding ceremony at Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo in Mandurriao district here.

Iloilo City’s recognitions under the highly urbanized city category included the Most Competitive LGU, Most Improved LGU, Government Efficiency, Resiliency, Economic Dynamism, and Infrastructure.

“Through good governance and strong community support, Iloilo City excels. We will continue to work with our fellow LGUs for the progress of Western Visayas,” said Treñas.

The CMCI is an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities. This year’s theme is “Revitalizing Regional Competitiveness”.

Since 2012, the CMCI has ranked the LGUs with the goal of strengthening, strategically outlining, and tracking local competitiveness.

This is achieved by a set of indicators falling under five major pillars: government efficiency, economic dynamism, infrastructure, resiliency, and innovation.

It addresses the lack of a standardized system for compiling such local indicators in the country, allowing LGUs to assess their relative level of competitiveness, serve as a guide for local policy-making and planning, and improve their services.
