Iloilo City mounts 1st in-person jobs fair since start of Covid

THE city government here with the help of partner agencies will offer over 18,000 jobs to Ilonggos who lost their jobs due to the pandemic or looking for new employment opportunities.

City Public Employment Service Office (PESO) manager Gabriel Felix Umadhay on Wednesday said they have 65 partner companies, 40 of which are local companies, nine overseas, and 16 business process outsourcing (BPO) firms for the Summerfest Job Fair on April 22, 2022 to be held at the fountain area of the Robinsons Place Iloilo.

“This is the first (face-to-face) since the pandemic because we can see that our economy is already starting to open up. Our BPO firms are allowed 100 percent of their floor capacity so there are no longer limitations on their hiring,” Umadhay said in an interview, adding that job fairs were done virtually at the height of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) crisis.

Placement agencies that temporarily stopped their operations during the health crisis have resumed and are now accepting applicants.

As of Wednesday, there are 5, 795 job vacancies available for the BPO firms, 5,063 for local hiring, and 7,900 for overseas placement.

There are job vacancies available for teachers, nurses and other health personnel, and in construction firms such as laborers, drivers, skilled electricians, and plumbers.

Overseas Filipino workers who came home after losing their job due to the pandemic can again start with their economic activity by looking for new jobs, he said.

“This is the first time of this magnitude so we hope that more Ilonggos will respond so we can help them find jobs,” Umadhay added.

Mayor Jerry P. Treñas has allowed the face-to-face conduct of the job fair with the guidance of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) this year.

“We just need to follow minimum public health protocols such as wearing of face mask and safe physical distancing all throughout the event,” he added.

The one-day event will be from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.  (PNA)
