ILOILO City capped off its domination in the Batang Pinoy 2019 Visayas Qualifying leg after ruling the girls basketball with a 79-72 win over Cebu Province in the gold medal game on Saturday at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
The IIonggas showed its dominance early as it surged to a 31-21 advantage at the end of two quarters. The Cebuanas came back charging in the third frame as they momentarily take a 40-36 lead.
The Iloilo City, however, made some key adjustments in the fourth period and was able to regain the advantage and even went up by double figures on consecutive fast break hits.
“Ang kadalag-an sa basketball girls resulta sang sakripisyo kag dedikasyon sang mga kabataan sa practice nga ila gindala sa hampang,” said Iloilo City head coach Aaron Blanca in a radio interview.
In chess, Kimberly Colaste of Iloilo City captured the girls’ 12-under standard division gold after finishing with a total of six points, half a point ahead of eventual silver medalist Ysabelle Noriel Nabor of La Carlota City (5.5 points).
Anton Benedict Bebit, meanwhile, took home Iloilo City’s fourth chess gold after topping the 12-under standard event by drawing with Mark Alfonso Azaola of Capiz in the final round.
Bacolod City’s Tyrone Dale Yao, on the other hand, emerged as the gold medal winner in the boys’ under-15 standard despite finishing with the same points as Jave Mareck Peteros of Cebu City./PN
