ILOILO City – Embracing inclusivity and active aging, the city government here has launched a pioneering internship program designed for senior citizens, offering them an opportunity to stay engaged, share their expertise, and contribute meaningfully to the workforce.
The initiative was created to explore the willingness of industries to provide opportunities for senior citizens.
“It was born because we wanted to see if the industry is open to giving opportunities for senior citizens to work. So the senior internship program was born, wherein the senior citizens will be given a chance to work as interns for one month in our industry sector,” said Councilor Sedfrey Cabaluna, the program’s main proponent.
The program, in collaboration with the Public Employment Services Office (PESO), aims to place senior citizens in meaningful roles within local government offices.
Participants will take on administrative tasks, mentorship programs, and community engagement activities, allowing them to apply their knowledge and continue learning new skills.
The councilor noted that while retirement in the Philippines typically starts at 60, many seniors still desire to contribute to their communities.
The initiative attracted 53 applicants aged 60 to 78, who underwent skills assessment by PESO on Jan. 31.
Participants will be assigned age-appropriate tasks without special treatment and are required to present a fit-to-work certificate. They will receive compensation based on the minimum wage law.
To further sustain the program, the city is actively working to connect senior interns with industry partners.
Mayor Jerry Treñas highlighted that the program is more than just employment – it is about restoring a sense of purpose and belonging among Iloilo’s elderly population.
“Our senior citizens have so much to offer. This program recognizes their invaluable contributions and empowers them to stay active and involved,” Treñas said.
PESO manager Gab Umadhay noted that the program’s short-term goal is to introduce seniors into the workforce, while the long-term vision is to create more sustainable employment opportunities for them in Iloilo City. (PNA)
