ILOILO City — This city is set to dazzle on December 1, as the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) – Iloilo Chapter officially lights up Christmas parols along Diversion Road (Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. Avenue, marking the start of the holiday season.

A parol is a traditional Filipino Christmas lantern, typically star-shaped, symbolizing the Star of Bethlehem.

Made from materials like bamboo, paper, or plastic, these lanterns are often brightly decorated with vibrant colors and lights.

Parols are hung in homes, streets, and public spaces during the holiday season, representing hope, goodwill, and the Filipino spirit of bayanihan, or communal unity.

PCCI-Iloilo president, Engr. Fulbert Woo, announced that over 100 Christmas parols are already in place along the stretch from the Infante flyover to Mandurriao’s Diversion Road.

“This year, we’ve prepared 2,000 parols with the backing of the Iloilo City Government, and additional installations may follow,” he said.

The parols were designed by persons deprived of liberty (PDL) from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Barangay Ungka, Jaro, showcasing the artistry and skills of the PDL community.

As the Iloilo City Engineering Office continues to mount the parols over the next few weeks, PCCI requests public patience regarding possible traffic delays.

The annual parol-lighting tradition, jointly organized by PCCI and the Iloilo City Government, has become a beloved event, illuminating the city’s main roads and bringing holiday joy to residents and visitors alike./PN
