ILOILO City completed its perfect run in the Batang Pinoy 2019 Visayas Qualifying leg girls volleyball. It crushed Negros Occidental, 25-14, 25-13, in the gold medal round yesterday at the Central Philippine University Gym in Iloilo City.

Behind the steady plays of Em-em Provido and Athea Aposaga, the Ilonggas made a quick work of the Negrenses in each set to duplicate their elimination round win against the latter.

Also part of the team were Vanessa Marie Diaz, Keiara Almirante, Dea Jane Canaya, Marianne Grace Calapaan, Pau Sampiano, Rovy Ann Amuan, Mary Flores, Lara Andrea, Alyanna Kaye Detablan, and Robielle Silla.

“Ang focus kag presence of mind sang team ang nangin factor sa kadalag-an,” said head coach Vanlihn Montelibano. “Gin-enjoy sang mga kabataan ang hampang kag wala nagpadala sa kulba.”

Iloilo City, however, failed to complete a sweep of the Batang Pinoy volleyball competition as its boys team suffered a close 23-25, 25-27 defeat to Cebu City in the finals.

Meanwhile, Alexi Kouzenye Cabayaran of Negros Occidental ended up as the most bemedalled athlete in the girls swimming event by ruling the girls’ 200m freestyle and 50 meter freestyle on Thursday.

Cabayaran, a sixth-grader in Mambukal Elementary School, earlier ruled the 50m and 100m backstroke, 100m free and the 200m medley relay with Mareanne Apdo, Ela Reign Buelos and Rianna Montelibano.

Also emerging victorious from the pool were Bacolod City’s Kalra Ysaballe Labayen (girls’ 15-under 400m free), Maxene Hayley Uy (girls’ 15-under 50m butterfly) and Negros Occidental’s Jay-R Punzalan (boys’ 13-15 100m back).

Guiliver Clyde Clemente of Antique, meanwhile, added up to his gold medal count in the week-long competition after dominating the boys 100m breaststroke for 13-15 years old in 1:13.24.

In karatedo, Bacolod City’s Pauline Kalaw and Joy Tubongbanua each captured a gold medal, while Shifra Medina, also from Bacolod City, settled for a silver medal finish./PN
